(For the whippersnappers who have no idea what Baywatch was, follow this link and be amazed)
Anyway, I stumbled across this amazing organisation today. Reading the paper, I discovered that 18 pilot whales were stranded on Farewell Spit, and wondered how someone like me could get involved if the same thing ever happened up here (which it frequently does).
The answer is PROJECT JONAH – Saving Whales since 1974
In their own words, this is what they do:
- “Rescue We deliver essential first aid to stranded or injured animals via our nationwide network of trained and passionate Marine Mammal Medics.
- Action Through our public education and awareness campaigns we inform and educate people, and encourage them to get involved.
- Protection We act as a watchdog to expose marine mammal suffering and help create and enforce laws that will protect these animals.”
There are many ways to get involved. You can even become a Marine Mammal Medic! How good is that?
